Hello, and thank you for visiting our website. In September of 2017 I was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, commonly referred to Lou Gehrig's Disease. While this disease has made headlines and gained recognization a bit more these past few years, not much has changed. Still no cure, but a few treatment options exist to extend lives by approximately 3 months. We aim to change the way new treatments are brought to fruition by raising awareness, engaging with drug manufacturers and biotechnology companies, and communicating with lawmakers and the FDA. My journey started in 2015 with a comminuted calcaneal fracture, which I believe was the stress trigger that got my ALS ball rolling. Since diagnosis, I began wearing ankle braces and using a cane up until August of 2018 when I suffered a fall, injuring both knees. My walking days were finished, but I was determined to keep going. I purchased a scooter and manual wheelchair so I could continue participating in my personal and work life. Eventually my body became weak and malnourished, so we ordered my first power wheelchair, acquired a bipap ventilator and had surgery to place a feeding tube in my stomach. Nearly all of my nutrition and meds are administered via a feeding tube, which makes my life much easier. |
Prior to diagnosis, I was a manager running solid waste companies, yes a glorified garbageman. I was fortunate to work side by side with family, building successful garbage companies. I am a father to Ashton, participating in sports and school activities, as well as teaching him life skills and the value of effort. Today, I am still all those things. I am just paralyzed in a wheelchair, but my family and caregivers enable me to participate in life.
While life is in me, my fire burns bright.
We hope you will join our fight to change the ALS trajectory, #teamshaunyboy.
